istanbul accommodation

Istanbul has an abundance of comfortable, well-located hotels. We've focused our recommendations on two safe, handy, and colorful neighborhoods: the Sultanahmet district (in the heart of the historic Old Town); and İstiklal street (a.k.a. İstiklal Caddesi, the main pedestrian drag running through the heart of the New District). Prices aren't cheap, but there are a few good deals to be found.
For each neighborhood, we list good hotels, helpful hints, and a selection of restaurants . Before choosing a hotel, read the descriptions of the two neighborhoods carefully. Your neighborhood is as important as your hotel for the success of your trip. For proximity to the major sights, consider the Sultanahmet district; for a look at today's modern, thriving Istanbul, with more nightlife and diverse restaurants—and far fewer tourists—choose İstiklal street.
Reserve ahead for Istanbul. Hotels are crowded in May, June, September, and October. The third week of August, prices skyrocket and rooms fill fast during the Turkey Grand Prix Formula 1 car race (Aug 24-27 in 2007, likely Aug 22-25 in 2008). Surprisingly, Christian holidays can affect rates and demand in Muslim Turkey, since Europeans flock here when they have time off work: Easter (March 23 in 2008, plus the week before and after), Ascension weekend (May 1-4 in 2008), and the Christmas holiday (roughly Dec 18-Jan 2 every year) are busy, so book far ahead for stays during these times. Interestingly, Muslim holidays do not generally affect Istanbul hotel prices, as most Turks travel away from the cities during those times. Most hotel rates go down from mid-November through mid-March (except around New Year's, when they charge summer rates). Some also offer small discounts in July and August, when the city is quieter. Many hotels list special promotional rates on their Web sites, and some offer free airport transfers (often oneway, either to or from the airport) to those staying multiple days (usually a 2-3 day minimum).
Some hotels offer discounted rates or other bonuses (such as free airport transfers) for readers of this book. We've generally noted these in their listings in this chapter. But to get this special treatment, always tell them that you're using the Rick Steves book when you reserve.
Like most European hotels, Istanbul hotel rooms are smaller than comparable hotel rooms in the US. We like places that are clean, small, central, traditional, friendly, and a good value.
