In this chapter, we will try to identify the district of Galata, at the opposite side of the Galata Bridge, and the Taksim Square and its environs. This area which was under the domination of the Genoese and the Venetian in the Byzantine period, has revealed no remnants of these civilizations. The Galata Tower and the Arabian Mosque are most ancient buildings of this era. After the city had been conquered by the Ottomans, due to the principle of tolerance for the minorities, the region remained unchanged. Therefore, there are a lot of churches and synagogues in Galata, Beyoğlu and Taksim and their environs. In the Ottoman era, especially since the 18th century and onwards, Galata and Beyoğlu and their environs had turned into an area where the European merchants and embassies were located. |
