The Egyptian Obelisk (Dikilitas)

DikilitasThe Egyptian Obelisk, which was built in 1500 BC, stood outside Luxor until Constantine had it brought to his city. This beautifully carved monument is broken and is probably only one third of its original height. It stands on a base, made in the 4th century AD, showing Theodosius I and his family in the katbisma watching various events. The four sides depict a chariot race; Theodosius preparing to crown the winner with a wreath of laurel; prisoners paying homage to the emperor; and the erection of the obelisk itself.

The Obelisque is found in Sultanahmet Square but was originally erected in Egypt by Pharaoh Tutmosis III. It was brought to Istanbul by Theodosius I in 390.
The Column is 19.59 meters high, made ol pin granite and illustrates the battle victories of the Pharaoh on its loin sides.
The western lace of the pedestal contains a representation ol Theodosius I sealed on his throne, his wife and children at his side receiving ambassadors.
