Çemberlitaş Hamamı (Turkish Bath)

Çemberlitaş HamamıThe Çemberlitaş Hamam is located on the Divanyolu near the Çemberlitaş Banded Column. It was built by Sultan Mural Ill's mother, Nurbanu Sultan in 1584 to provide a source of revenue for the Atik Valide Mosque Complex in Üsküdar. Its architect was Sinan
It was originally built as a double hamam accomodating both men and women in seperate sections. But during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz (1841-1824) part of the women's section was destroyed to allow for the widening of a nearby road. As a result, only the men's section is in use today. (s2)

This hamam is also known as the Valide Hamamı because of Its foundation by Nurbanu Sultan, a woman of Venetian origin, the wife of Sultan Selim II and the mother of Sultan Murad III. It was built in 1584 and the architect, though not officially stated In the records, was Sinan. It is a double hamam consisting of two identical and adjoining buildings. Over the entrance for men there is an ornamental inscription of six verses. The entrance for women was probably on Divanyolu but today the women share the same entrance with the men. Inside, through a new door added afterwards, women go off to their own section. The dressing rooms of the men and the women are roofed by huge domes. Each dome has its own lantern but only the lantern in the women's section is original. The next room is the three-domed cool room where a wooden door under the middle dome opens into the hot room. Here, the great dome rests on an arches supported by columns with capitals ornamented with rhombus shaped carvings. After the recent restorations, it has turned out to be a very pleasant and hygienic place offering services like oil-massage and skin care, which is quite unusual in a traditional Turkish bath. Open until late hours, it is particularly recommended to those who would like to get some relaxation after a tiring day (s5)
